Flash Fiction

Sharon stood in front of the mirror in the girl’s room at school, Tina was sitting on the counter, swinging her legs back and forth.

“What do you think?” Sharon asked

“It depends on the day I guess. Like this morning, I woke up from a dream about bugs. It was a little scary because they were big and all over the house but after I woke up I knew it was just a dream. But then I was still thinking about bugs...”

“I mean...”

“So, I was looking for bugs all the way to school, but there aren’t many bugs out this time of year and that got me thinking about spring coming. And that reminded me of the field trip and I suddenly remembered I forgot to get my permission slip signed! So, I ran back home and got Mom to sign it and she had to give me a ride to school, which made me think about how next year I can start driver’s ed. And when I get my license I can drive myself to school...”


“But of course, I’ll need a car. So, then I was thinking I really should take that job at the corner store I told you about. I could start saving money for a car. Plus, it would make my mother so happy. She always says she had a part time job at fifteen and it was wonderful. As if. But it would help me get a car when I’m ready to get my license... What do you think?”

“I think I’ll ask Linda what she thinks of this shirt with this skirt, instead of asking you...”
