Poem inspired by the song Amazing Grace. Joint first place in Lighthouse Poetry Contest.
Unwarranted Forgiveness

I was blind and lost,
beset by fears and worries,
wandering in the wild,
stumbling through brambles,
unaware of my plight,
darkness my flag
and ruin my badge,
beyond hope in my emptiness.

Then You held out Your hand to me
and Your light pierced the night.
Eyes opened, I understood,
was lifted from my imagining
by the expanse of Your mercy
and the joy of the Lord filled my soul.
That You should speak to me,
least of men, is wondrous indeed.

Amazing Grace, I learned its name,
forgiveness not earned but freely given,
dragged from the mire and cleansed,
feet set upon the path straight and true
and all through your unfailing Grace
My gratitude cannot begin to encompass
the magnificence of your mercy
and I am left, speechless before You.
