The Noise

“What’s that noise?”

“What noise?”

“Listen...” A strange tiny, noise was coming from the window.

“Maybe it’s a leaf.”

“A leaf couldn’t make that sound, it sounds like something hard.”

“What, you think someone is knocking on the window? On the second-floor window?”

“No, not someone, something. It doesn’t sound like scraping, it sounds like tapping or something. Listen.”

“Well, yeah, I guess it does sound like tapping. Maybe something blew up there in the wind and caught on the outside.”

“Yeah, maybe... but I can’t think of how. The screen is out for the winter, and there isn’t really anything else on the outside to catch anything. Go see what it is.”

“Yeah, you go look.”

“I’m afraid to look.”

“What are you afraid of?”

“You’re the one who made it scary. Not a bird, too high for a person, nothing to catch anything on. I’m not gonna stick my face in front of whatever’s out there. You go look!”

“Fine. I’ll go look as soon as the movie’s over. Ooh! Here comes the part where the Zergons land on Plator! Turn it up!”

Outside the window, Techlor sat alone in his small ship waiting for the wind to slow. His mission was almost over, but he couldn’t get back to the mother ship in this wind. Thankfully he’d found this small, flat nook to wait it out, safely hidden from the earthlings.
