The Fourth

“Today’s the fourth.”

“You just made that up.”

“No, I looked at a calendar. It’s the fourth.”

“I’m sure it’s the third, yesterday was the second.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because today’s the third, yesterday had to be the second.”

“That’s basing incorrect information on more incorrect information. Yesterday was not the second.”

“But it had to be.”

“It’s not, it’s important to me that it’s not the fourth.”

“Because on the fourth, my mother is flying in from Boston to visit me. I’ve been cleaning my apartment all week. I stocked up the kitchen. I made reservations at two fancy restaurants, and a hit play to take her to. I even bought myself some new clothes!”

“Well, you sound ready! What’s the problem?”

“I’m supposed to pick her up at the airport at two o’clock, on the fourth...”

“It’s three thirty...”

“I think my head is exploding...”
