A poem to acknowledge a "simple" object

By Melissa Fredericks

Staple in most households

Like salt and flour

Milk and eggs

There in American kitchens

Before the dawn of electricity

Resting gently in the corner

Simply designed

Stiff bristles

Long cylindrical handle

In my infancy,

Made of straw,

twigs and corn husks

Levi Dickenson raised me

Gifting my toddler version to his wife

Made of sorghum grass

Would Levi be dismayed?

Knowing his wonderful idea

Grew up to be synthetic

World traveler,

Wedding ceremony

Sports equipment

So much more

a simple housekeeper
