A heart full of love and devotion dies slowly

Death of a Heart

Love found its measure
In the depths of its devotion,
A secret joy of never
Having to couch in words
That wonderfully pure attraction
That was always there.

But it never went the distance
Along that uncertain course,
It stretched and swelled
Until at last it lay
Trampled and left alone
Beside a deserted path.

And here no flowers dare grow,
Nor summer sun touch
With consoling warmth,
No rustling breeze,
Nor song of bird
To fill the depths of anguished solitude,
Only the deepest and painful thoughts
Of past brighter days,
When life had beauty
Because it was shared with you.
