Villanelle - contest entry - Christmas in July 2020
The delights of the day linger in the air,
Warm, gingery memories surround;
Drops of frosting, like snowflakes, caught in your hair.

Spices startle my nose, warm and rare,
Nutmeg complexities, deep and brown.
The delights of the day linger in the air.

Arousing my consciousness to dare,
Is insouciant cinnamon, finely ground;
Drops of frosting, like snowflakes, caught in your hair.

Baking Christmas dreams we will share,
The magic of holiday schemes abound,
The delights of the day linger in the air.

Decorating cookies with glitter and flare,
Laughter is holiday's musical sound;
Drops of frosting, like snowflakes, caught in your hair.

I will remember you always, young and fair,
With a halo of tinsel as your crown.
The delights of the day linger in the air,
Drops of frosting, like snowflakes, caught in your hair.

Prompt: Write a poem that incorporates the smells and aromas of the holiday season.

Form: Villanelle
The villanelle is a highly structured poem made up of five tercets followed by a quatrain, with two repeating rhymes and two refrains.
