For Mom and Dad
For Mom and Dad

... Behold, I have dreamed a dream;
or, in other words, I have seen a vision.

         —1 Nephi 8:2

The knowledge and intelligence
you attained in this life
rose with you to the world
where you now work

as before—studying, praying,
receiving revelation with ease
of long practice.

But no one taught you
how to communicate through the veil
with the living. My thoughts
are twistier than kudzu
coiling in all directions, choking out
growth under leafy green flood.
My drowsy mind glides away
like unmoored boat, oblivious
to you grasping after to snatch me back.

You persist with patience
born of long diligence,
returning to my dreams
night in, night out.

Eventually you will learn
how to talk to me again,
and I will learn
to listen.
