A virtue, yes, but not at all simple to practice.
Patience is to fast long and examine
knots and snarls of hunger
with care to unpick and understand,
not to scrabble and scurry
for any filling at hand

It is to walk toward desert sun,
eyes askance and limbs rhythmic,
to take wilting heat as well
as light

It is to sit with a dying woman
periodically seized by pain,
echo of labors long past,
and coax her to ease into it,
to let go

Then when she is gone,
it is to hold the hollow inside open
like unresolved chord,
like unfinished poem,
like unanswered, unending
prayer
