It cast a mesmerizing spell
When we were kids so long ago
Yeah, once upon a time
We’d visit with my Uncle Joe
We’d go there all the time

My uncle had an hourglass
He used from time to time
(That was the joke he always told
He said it all the time)

An hourglass is not much use
When looking for the time
It only measures part of life
An hour at a time

It doesn’t run on batteries
They’d be a waste of time
Instead we watched the sand fall down
They were the sands of time

Each grain of sand would represent
A tiny spec of time
As fast as you could blink your eye
The merest blip in time

The funny thing about that sand
When I think back in time
It cast a mesmerizing spell
On us, time after time

My Uncle Joe has passed away
It’s been a long, long time
I miss him and his hourglass
Yeah, I miss him all the time
