Sometimes I'm the banana peel you slip on
when you're carelessly racing to catch
the six o'clock evening News broadcast.

Sometimes I'm the protective lotion against
sunburn
that allows you to go cycling
in the summertime without a shirt.

Sometimes I'm the builder of chainlink fences
that denote boundaries to keep everyone
safely in their proper place.

But right now I'm an elderly man confined to bed,
trying to entertain strangers using someone else's words,
to convey a sense of honesty and truth.
