Fanfiction script for an episode of "The Incredible Hulk" cartoon (1982)
The following is a fanfiction script set in the universe of the 1982 animated Marvel series The Incredible Hulk. It is a heavy revision of the Michael Reaves-penned episode "Bruce Banner Unmasked," but radically alters the plot. It also alters the canonical powers of the title character in one key respect.

Action cartoons were a lot cheezier in their dialogue and action forty years ago, and I've tried to keep to the tone and style of the original.

To compare this fanfiction with the original that inspired it, check out: "Bruce Banner Unmasked"   at Daily Motion.

"The Puppet Master Strikes!"

FADE IN:

EXT. DESERT -- ARMY BASE -- DAY
The frame PANS across a desert. Plants, wildlife and sand.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
                   Hey, this is Stan Lee!

The peaceful scene is interrupted as THE HULK bursts through a canyon wall. He ROARS, and leaps into the air.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
The Hulk! A creature of superhuman
                   power and rage!

Angle on a line of tanks and soldiers flooding across the desert floor. The Hulk leaps into their midst.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
Wouldn't it be terrible if a super-
villain took control of such a
creature? Well, you're about to see
the evil Puppet Master try to do just
that! Hang tight, heroes, 'cos here
                   we go!

Hulk punches tanks. He picks up Jeeps and hurls them. He pounds the earth, cracking it open.

                             HULK
                   Soldiers always fighting Hulk! Hulk
                   smash soldiers!

Angle on MAJOR NED TALBOT, his head sticking from the open turret of a tank, with a walkie-talkie.

                             TALBOT
Alpha Company, move up and fire at
                   will! I repeat -- Ulp!

A shadow falls across him, and he looks up. Angle on the snarling Hulk. Talbot ducks inside the tank. The Hulk grabs the cannon and tears the turret off, hurling it away. A terrified Talbot sticks his head out of the bottom half the tank.

Angle on a hilltop. The turret disappears behind the crest of a hill. There's an explosion behind the hilltop. The head of RICK JONES pops up from behind the crest.

                             RICK
Oh, man, Doc! You're really in the
soup this time! I know this works on
bulls. I hope it works on Hulks!

He waves a red cloth in the wind.

                             RICK
                        (shouting)
                   Hulk! Hulk! Over here!

Angle on Hulk as he looks up and over.

                             HULK
                   Him again! Always him!

Hulk leaps away just before a shell explodes where he stood.

Angle on Hulk landing next to Rick. He bends over and glowers, like a maddened bull, into Rick's face. Rick only grins back.

                             HULK
Puny Rick, always try to stop Hulk!

                             RICK
And you always thank me for it later!

Rick raises a canister and sprays a pink cloud into Hulk's face. Hulk buries his face in his hands and roars.

                             HULK
Hulk can't see! Hulk feel funny! Hulk
                   smash ... puny ... Ri-i-i-i-i-

Rick dives out of the way as Hulk falls face first to the ground. Rick grabs the Hulk's ankle and starts fruitlessly to pull at it

                             RICK
Come on, Doc, hurry up and change
back! Noodle-head Ned and his Hulk-
                   busters'll be here any minute!

The frame TILTS up to the sky and PANS over to distant hills.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
                   So Rick Jones, Bruce Banner's
                   faithful friend, helps the scientist
escape the army yet again. But
another figure is also watching, the
villain we warned you about, the
                   uncanny Puppet Master!

EXT. DESERT HILLS -- MINING CAMP -- DAY
On a hilltop, binoculars to his eyes, a short, bald figure grins as he watches the army maneuvers. He is the PUPPET MASTER.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Boys and their toys. But soon they
                   shall be my playthings!

He moves to a work table, which holds a pile of glowing clay. He scoops some up and begins molding it.

                             PUPPET MASTER (O.S.)
This desert is rich in the atomic
clay I need for the puppets I use to
                   control men's minds!

The frame PANS to encompass a row of clay models, each about a foot tall. Dissolve to a scene of WORKMEN in vests and hard hats, duplicates of the models just glimpsed. Their eyes are colorless, their movements robotic, as they move earth with steam shovels, bulldozers, and dump trucks.

                             PUPPET MASTER (V.O.)
Already my puppets control the clay
mines, and with the clay they're
producing, soon I'll have a whole
                   empire of puppets!

EXT. DESERT -- HIGHWAY -- DAY
A pick-up truck barrels along the road. Rick drives. His passenger, BRUCE BANNER, nurses his head as though suffering a migraine.

                             BRUCE
Thanks so much, Rick. I really owe
you this time. This was one of the
                   worst ones yet!

                             RICK
Quit it, Doc! Besides, I'm the one
                   who owes you. Big time!

                             BRUCE
You paid off that debt a long time
ago. You need to forget about me,
Rick. I'm going to hurt you one day.

                             RICK
That's not going to happen, Doc. You
just need to take a page from me --
chill, don't thrill! Anyway, no way
I'm gonna let you shake me off!

EXT. DESERT -- GAMMA BASE ONE -- MAIN GATE -- DAY
Rick pulls up and stops.

                             RICK
But, uh, if you do need me again
soon, you better try calling me here.

He hands Bruce a slip of paper, and grins bashfully.

                             RICK
Rita and me are going to Mesa City to
see a friend of hers. I think Rita
wants to ask her if I'm a keeper!

                             BRUCE
Oh, you're definitely a keeper, Rick.

                             RICK
Thanks, Doc! But call me day or
night, for any reason! Remember, best
                   buds forever!

EXT. DESERT -- DAY
The army fires weapons of various kinds at the Hulk. He tears the turret off a tank, then with a ROAR charges at the screen, which goes BLACK.

The frame pulls back to reveal a giant wall monitor being watched by GENERAL ROSS  , BETTY ROSS,   and Bruce Banner. The screen turns into a shot of broken film stock.

                             GENERAL ROSS
That was this morning, and it's why I
want every computer and test tube on
this base working overtime to find
out who and what the Hulk is! From
this moment on, that's our top
                   priority!

Angle on Bruce Banner as he reacts to the General's order.

EXT. MESA CITY -- DOWNTOWN -- STREET AND SIDEWALK -- DAY
A modest downtown of store fronts and light foot traffic. RICK JONES and RITA RIVERA stand with their arms around each other on the sidewalk before a storefront that reads MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS. As they smile into the sunlight, a wall-mounted camera BUZZES and swivels to focus on them; then it turns away, as though uninterested.

                             RITA
I wonder where Anya is. She was
supposed to meet us here an hour ago!

                             RICK
I hope she never shows up.

                             RITA
                   Rick!

                             RICK
Only 'cos I love having you all to myself!

A WOMAN and her 8-year-old SON bustle from the shop doorway. They bump into Rick and Rita, and the son drops something.

                             RITA
                   Hey! Watch where you're going!

The woman and son stop and turn. Their eyes are blank and colorless, their faces like masks. When she speaks it is with the calm, echoing monotone of the Puppet Master's puppets.

                             WOMAN
                        (puppet voice)
                   I'm sorry, I didn't see you. Please
                   accept my apology.

Rick kneels to pick up the dropped item. It's a T-Rex, and he smiles cheerily as he hands it back to the blank-eyed boy.

                             RICK
                   That's alright. Say, that's quite a
toy you got there, li'l pardner!

                             WOMAN
                        (puppet voice)
We bought it in this shop. The owner
does amazing work with clay. You
should go in and look around.

                             RICK
Well, if that dinosaur's anything to
go by, I think we will!

He and Rita turn. The woman watches with dead, blank eyes.

INT. MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- DAY
The shop is spacious. Life-size models of people and animals dot the show floor. Rick and Rita enter and look around.

                             RITA
Oh, Rick, this really is amazing!

The Puppet Master enters from another room. His manner is oily.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Why, thank you, my dear! Such a
pretty compliment from a pretty girl!

                             RITA
Did you make all these sculptures?

                             PUPPET MASTER
                   Oh, they're more than sculptures.
With them I can capture your very
                   soul!

He indicates a glass-fronted display cabinet, which holds a row of clay puppets. Included are the woman and boy seen previously.

                             PUPPET MASTER
May I make a one of you?

                             RITA
                   No, we're just looking.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Oh, no charge! I would put it in my
display window. A face such as yours
                   would be superb advertising!

                             RICK
Go for it, Rita! If it turns out as
good as he makes it sound, I'll buy
                   it for you!

                             PUPPET MASTER
Excellent! If you'll both just stand
                   over here.

He pushes them in front of four cameras before a blank wall, and produces a pair of scissors.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Excuse me, but my art requires just a
                   touch of voodoo magic!

Rita CRIES a soft "Oh!" as Puppet Master SNIPS at her hair. Rick only grins as his hair is also snipped.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Now I'll go mix this with my special
clay while my cameras scan you--

Rick's pager BEEPS and he checks it.

                             RICK
Uh oh. Looks like we'll have to do
this another time. Doc needs me.

                             PUPPET MASTER
This will only take a few minutes!

                             RICK
Not got time. We have to get back to
                   the army base, like, now.

Rick leads Rita from the shop. Puppet Master stamps with rage.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Oh, but now I must add those two to
my collection! If they can get onto
the army base, I could use them to
                   begin making puppet soldiers!

He opens a secret panel and disappears into another room.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- DAY
Banks of TV monitors hang on the walls. Some show exterior and interior scenes. Others show people, standing in stiff poses, and beneath these computerized robot arms carve chunks of clay into the likeness of the displayed individuals. In the center of the room is a computer console covered in blinking buttons.

Puppet Master opens two trays in the console, drops snippets of hair into them, and closes them. He begins working buttons.

                             PUPPET MASTER
I have their hair, but I still need
to scan them before I can make their
                   puppets. Luckily, I already have
puppets who can bring them back!

Angle on a display case with multiple clay models standing on a checkerboard. One of these models is a policeman. The square beneath it lights up, and a tone starts BEEPING.

EXT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- ESTABLISHING SHOT -- DAY

INT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- COMPUTER LAB -- DAY
A lab filled with computer banks. Betty Ross and Bruce Banner are at work at computer keyboards.

                             BETTY
This is odd. It looks like someone's
altered some of the data. Bruce, can
                   you check this?

                             BRUCE
When I get back, Betty. I want to get
these samples to the other lab.

He rolls a cart holding an open box from the room.

INT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- HALLWAY -- DAY
Bruce rolls the cart down a corridor past armed guards.

                             BRUCE (V.O.)
The army has collected hair and other
samples from the scenes of Hulk's
rampages. If they analyze them, they
might learn that I'm really the Hulk.

EXT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- DAY
Bruce emerges into the open and looks around.

                             BRUCE (V.O.)
I paged Rick to meet me here, so he
can take this stuff and hide it for
me. I hope he shows up before --

Behind him, Major Talbot steps into the frame.

                             TALBOT
Hoy! Banner! Where are you going?

EXT. MESA CITY -- DOWNTOWN -- STREET AND SIDEWALK -- DAY
Rick and Rita approach Rick's truck.

                             RITA
Did Bruce say what he needed us for?

                             RICK
No, his message just said to hurry.

As he grasps the door handle, a POLICEMAN appears at his side. His eyes are hidden by blank sunglasses.

                             POLICEMAN
Sir, would you please come with me?

                             RICK
                   What's wrong, officer?

The policeman puts his hand to his holster. Rick reacts with shock. Then the policeman is knocked to the ground with a baseball bat by a small, black-haired girl: ANYA RAMIREZ.

                             ANYA
Rita! Thank heavens I found you!

                             RITA
Anya! What do you think you're doing?

                             RICK
                   Yeah, that was a cop!

                             ANYA
Trust me! We have to get out of here
                   right away! Now, amigos!

EXT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- DAY
Talbot examines a test tube, then sets it back on the cart.

                             TALBOT
Yuck! Do whatever you have to,
Banner. Just get it out of my sight!

                             BRUCE
                   Yes, Major. Happy to oblige!

Banner rolls the cart away, into a hangar-like building.

INT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- MOTOR POOL -- DAY
It is filled with trucks and Jeeps. Bruce wipes his brow.

                             BRUCE (V.O.)
I can't wait for Rick any longer! I
have to get these samples off the
base before Betty or her father
                   catches me!

He loads the cart into a Jeep, then gets behind the wheel. Through the windshield he sees a SOLDIER running up.

                             soldier
                   Hey! You! Stop!

Bruce grits his teeth and starts the Jeep.

                             BRUCE
Well, it's all or nothing now!

EXT. MESA CITY -- DOWNTOWN -- ALLEY -- DAY
Rick, Rita, and Anya run into an alley between two buildings, and stop. Anya watches for pursuit, then turns to her friends

                              ANYA
I'm so sorry to get you mixed up in
this, Rita! But I couldn't tell you
over the phone, and I don't know who
                    in town I can trust!

                              RITA
                    But what's wrong, Anya?

                              ANYA
I don't know! Except that things in
                    town have gotten super-creepy!
                    There's something wrong with the
                    people. They're acting like they've
                    been hypnotized and are under
someone's power. It was just a few at
first, but now it's more and more!

The frame tilts up to capture a wall-mounted camera. A light flashes on, and it BUZZES to focus on the three figures below.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- DAY
A monitor shows Rick and Rita in the alley. The frame pans over to take in two hunks of clay. Lights on the machines blink from red to green, and robot arms descend to begin carving Rick's and Rita's likenesses into the clay. As they work:

                             ANYA (V.O.)
I even overheard some of my own
                   friends talking about someone called
The Puppet Master. It sounded like
                   he's brainwashing people, turning
                   them into mindless puppets!

Angle on the Puppet Master, who is watching. He GIGGLES.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Not mindless, my dear. Just under the
influence of an even greater mind!

EXT. MESA CITY -- DOWNTOWN -- ALLEY -- DAY
Rick and Rita exchange a skeptical glance.

                              ANYA
                    Look, I know I sound crazy --!

                              RITA
                    It's okay, Anya.

                              RICK
You can come with us out to the army
base. Doc Banner wants us out there
anyway, and we can talk to him all
                    about it.

                              ANYA
Thanks. But watch out for cameras! I
think the Puppet Master is using them
                    to spy on everyone!

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- DAY
The monitor shows Rick, Rita, and Anya moving off. The robot arms finish Rick's and Rita's head and neck. Then the green lights turn red, and the arms retract and fall still.

Angle on monitor, which changes to show frontal and profile images of Rick and Rita. At the screens' bottoms flashes a command: "CAPTURE!"

EXT. MESA CITY -- DOWNTOWN -- STREET -- DAY
Rick, Rita and Anya step from the alley, and freeze. A crowd is converging on them. Their eyes are colorless, and they raise their hands. Rita and Anya shrink up against Rick.

                             RITA
Anya? Is this the kind of creepy you
                   were telling us about?

END OF ACT ONE

FADE IN:

EXT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- DAY
Betty, Talbot, and the General.

                             TALBOT
I thought Banner was cleared to take
that kind of thing, so I let him go.

                             BETTY
Bruce is acting very strangely, Dad.
First he changed the data we had
                   collected, then he disappeared after
taking some samples to the other lab.

                             GENERAL ROSS
But why would he --? Look out!

A Jeep barrels around the corner. Soldiers chase after it.

                             GENERAL ROSS
What's going on? Stop that Jeep!

EXT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- JEEP-- DAY
Bruce, his jaw clenched, steers the Jeep.

                             BRUCE (V.O.)
At least things can't get any worse!

Angle on Bruce's hands as they grip the steering wheel. They are starting to glow.

                             BRUCE
No! Not now! Please don't --!

Soldiers run up to block him, and fire into the air.

                             BRUCE (V.O.)
Keep calm, Banner. Remember what Rick
                   said. Chill, don't thrill! Chill,
                   don't thrill!

He grimaces hard as he accelerates for the gate, trying to beat the tank that is maneuvering to block him. At the last moment, he swerves around it and busts through the cross arm. Soldiers dive out of the way.

On the other side, Bruce glances back briefly. The glow fades from his hands, and relief creases his brow.

                             BRUCE
Good advice, Rick, I owe you again!

EXT. MESA CITY -- ESTABLISHING SHOT -- NIGHT
The frame PANS over the skyline of Mesa City.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
But as Bruce Banner races to Mesa
City, little does he guess that the
town is now in thrall to the sinister
                   Puppet Master!

INTERCUT
Rick, Rita, and Anya sprint through the streets, pursued by a crowd. As the fugitives pass under a street lamp, its bracket-mounted camera twists around to focus on them.
Inside his factory, the Puppet Master watches the fugitives and their pursuers on the monitors, LAUGHING. Beneath the monitor, robot arms carve the shoulders of Rick and Rita.

Rick, Rita, and Anya run past an electronic store's display window. Five cameras swivel to track them.

                             PUPPET MASTER (V.O.)
That's it! Let yourselves be herded!

The Puppet Master's factory. Robot arms finish Rick and Rita to the elbows.

Rick, Rita, and Anya pause, panting, in front of an ATM.

                             PUPPET MASTER (V.O.)
Little do you know that every time
you pass one of my scanners --

The Puppet Master's factory. The monitor shows a fish-eye image of the three. The robot arms finish the models to the waist. The trio vanish from the monitor, and the arms retract.

                             PUPPET MASTER (V.O.)
-- you come closer to joining my
                   puppet army!

EXT. MESA CITY -- STREET -- NIGHT
Rick, Rita and Anya run up to a shop door.

                             RICK
                        (panting)
It's no use! Every time we turn
                   around, someone starts chasing us!

He leans against the shop door, which falls open.

                             RICK
                   Quick! In here!

They all run into the shop.

INT. TOY STORE -- NIGHT
The dusky shop is lined with shelves, and the aisles are crowded with giant stuffed plushies and old-fashioned robots. The three hide behind these and peer out.

The door opens and figures enter. They are black silhouettes, out of which pairs of cold, white eyes shine.

The puppet crowd filters into the store, checking behind shelves and cases, moving closer to where the fugitives cower.

Close angles on Rick, Rita, and Anya, tensing as they wait.

The puppet crowd is nearly upon them. Rita draws back in terror as one puppet puts his hand on the plushie she is hiding behind.

Then, as one, the puppet crowd freezes, straightens, turns, and files back toward the door. Rick, Rita, and Anya watch, then step from their hiding places with fearful expressions.

                             RICK
Whew, that was close. I wonder why
                   they left.

High up, multiple cameras are focused on the trio below.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- NIGHT
A bank of monitors shows the trio from alternate angles, and the frame tilts to show the robot arms rapidly carving the knees of the clay figures of Rick and Rita. O.S., the Puppet Master LAUGHS maniacally.

EXT. MESA CITY -- STREET -- NIGHT
A Jeep with a crumpled front fender drives down the deserted streets. Angle on Bruce Banner as he looks around. POV shots of the empty streets he passes.

                             BRUCE
                   Strange. The town looks deserted.

Bruce pulls up next to Rick's truck and stares at it.

                             BRUCE
Here's the address Rick gave me, and
there's his truck. It looks like he
                   never got my message.

As he dismounts with the box of Hulk samples, he looks around at the empty streets.

                             BRUCE
Whatever's wrong, I hope he and Rita
                   are okay.

EXT. ANYA'S HOUSE -- FRONT DOOR -- NIGHT
Bruce, holding the box under his arm, knocks at the door. It is opened by Rita; Rick stands behind her. They EXCLAIM with relief ("Doc!" "Oh thank goodness!") and pull him inside.

INT. ANYA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT
Bruce, Rick, and Rita, in the foyer of a house that is decorated in a tasteful Western motif. Rita hugs Bruce.

                             RITA
Thank heavens you're here, we've been
so scared! We called the base and
                   they said you ran off!

                             BRUCE
I had to. But what happened to you?
                   Didn't you get my message?

                             RITA
Yes, but it's been all kinds of crazy
                   around here! Someone called The
Puppet Master is loose in the city!

                             BRUCE
                        (shocked)
The Puppet Master? It's bad news if
                   he's here. What's been happening?

                             RICK
Not much, if you don't count being
chased all over town by zombies!
We're lucky we made it back here!

                             BRUCE
Tell me about it after you hide
something for me. The General is
trying to discover the identity of
the Hulk, and I can't let him or
Betty get ahold of these samples.

Rick takes and examines a bottle from the box Bruce is holding.

                             RICK
                   Samples? What kind of samples?

                             BRUCE
Hair and skin. With their DNA, the
army could link me to the Hulk!

                             RICK
                   Hair, huh? That's lucky.

He knocks Bruce to the floor with a full-body haymaker. The box goes flying. Rick, his eyes colorless, turns to address Rita.

                             RICK
                        (puppet voice)
Call the Puppet Master. Tell him
the Hulk will soon be under his control.

Behind him, a door swings open. Anya sits on the bed, a gag over her mouth, bound head to foot. Her eyes are wide with horror.

END OF ACT TWO

* * * * *

FADE IN:

INT. ANYA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT
Rick and Rita stand over Bruce, who sprawls on the floor.

                             Narrator (V.O.)
Say it isn't so! Bruce's friends are
now thralls of the Puppet Master?

The front door opens, and a crowd filters in. All their eyes are colorless. Rick points to Bruce.

                             Rick
                        (puppet voice)
Take him to the studio. The Puppet
                   Master needs him immediately.

EXT. MESA CITY -- STREET -- NIGHT
A convoy of army trucks drives through the deserted streets of Mesa City. Major Talbot drives the lead Jeep, with General Ross and Betty Ross. Betty takes out a pager.

INSERT pager, which reads, "Hi Betty."

                             BETTY
It's Rita! She says that Bruce is
                   with her and Rick!

She glances up and points O.S.

                             BETTY
                   And there's Rick now!

A crowd is shuffling down the sidewalk. Rick detaches from it and turns to look O.S. His face is blank, but then the color blooms into his eyes, and he smiles warmly as the Jeep pulls up.

                             BETTY
Rick! I just heard that Bruce is here
                   with you!

                             Rick
                        (friendly but worried)
Yeah, and I'm real glad you showed
up, Betty. Doc looks like he's been
                   in a train wreck!
                        (to General Ross)
Sir, you need to get to the police
                   station. There's some real creepy
                   shenanigans going on in town!

                             GENERAL ROSS
                   Major, deploy the men!

                             TALBOT
                   Yes sir! Men, deploy!

Soldiers pour out of the trucks and run up and down the sidewalks. The Jeep pulls away.

                             BETTY
So what's wrong with Bruce? He's been
                   acting so strange lately!

                             RICK
                   Everyone's been acting strange. I'll
tell you about it on the way.

The frame PANS away to take in the soldiers as the spread up and down the sidewalk. One by one, with muffled cries, they are pulled off the streets by hands that stretch from out of alleyways and doors.

EXT. MESA CITY -- MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- NIGHT
Rick and Betty enter the frame.

                             BETTY
The Puppet Master? But in that case
-- Why are we stopping here?

Rick shoves her into the shop.

INT. MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- NIGHT
As before, but dark and shadowy, and filled with figures. Only Rick and Betty are clearly lit. The color is gone from Rick's eyes again as he grips her by the arm and shoulder.

                             RICK
                        (puppet voice)
I'm taking you to the Puppet Master,
Betty. All of us are his puppets.
                   Soon you'll be one too.

                             BETTY
                   Rick! This isn't funny! You're
                   scaring me! Rick!

She SCREAMS as the crowd closes about her.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- CELL -- NIGHT
Bruce sags in a chair. Betty's SCREAM (O.S.) reverberates, and he sits up sharply.

                             BRUCE
What was that? What's going on?

Bruce and his chair are in a large, unfurnished cell with a transparent shield separating it from the main lair. Bruce touches the barrier, then fruitlessly throws his shoulder against it a few times, GRUNTING.

Angle on the Puppet Master, tapping at his console as Bruce, watches from behind the transparent barrier. Capsules regularly drop from a pneumatic tube near where he stands. The box that Bruce brought rests near the Puppet Master's elbow.

As he talks, the Puppet Master works the console, he picks up and opens capsules, empties hair clippings into trays. Soldiers, including General Ross and Major Talbot, appear on the monitors, and robot arms carve puppets of them. The Puppet Master is very calm -- a man supremely happy in his work.

                             BRUCE
                   Puppet Master!

                             PUPPET MASTER
                   Oh! Good, you're awake.

Angle on the box that Bruce brought into town.

                             PUPPET MASTER
I wanted to thank you for bringing me
these hair samples. Soon you and the
Hulk will both be my puppets.

He breaks out in a maniacal LAUGH.

Bruce looks around. POV shot of clay puppets being carved.

                             BRUCE
But you have to scan people before
you can make a puppet! What if the
                   Hulk doesn't show up?

                             PUPPET MASTER
                   Boy!

Rick enters the frame.

                             PUPPET MASTER
How can we get the Hulk to show up?

                             RICK
                        (puppet voice)
Doc turns into the Hulk when he gets
angry. I bet he'd get real mad real
quick if you turned Betty Ross into
                   one of your puppets.

Angle on Bruce, who GASPS.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Then bring me a lock of her hair!

Bruce throws himself against the barrier.

                             BRUCE
You monster! You --! Rick! Snap out
of it! You don't want to do this!

Angle on Rick as he turns to stare blankly back at Bruce. Then the color floods into his eyes, and he grins.

                             RICK
But I do, doc! I love working for the
Puppet Master! You'll love it too!

His eyes fade again.

                             RICK
                        (puppet voice)
                   We'll be best buds forever!

INT. MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- NIGHT
Betty, struggling, is held against the wall by two figures, as the four cameras BUZZ and focus on her. Rick approaches her, wielding a pair of scissors.

                             BETTY
                   Rick! What are you doing?

Angle on General Ross and Major Talbot as they enter the frame.

                             GENERAL ROSS
                        (puppet voice)
Stop fighting, Betty. It will be
better when you are one of us.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- NIGHT
Bruce rages as he watches Betty on the monitor.

                             PUPPET MASTER (V.O.)
                   Are you losing control yet?

Bruce grabs his head and SCREAMS. He transforms into the Hulk.

Angle on the CACKLING Puppet Master. He touches a button.

                             PUPPET MASTER
Yes, there he is! And soon he will be
                   my puppet!

Close on a heap of clay as robot arms come to life and begin carving it into the likeness of the Hulk.

Angle on Hulk as he throws himself against the barrier.

                             HULK
Hulk hate funny little man! Hulk
                   smash funny little man!

INTERCUT
The Hulk bashing the barrier, which slowly begins to crack.

The robots, completing the Hulk puppet: head, shoulders, torso, waist and hips, legs, feet.

A spider-web of cracks spreads through the barrier at a mighty blow.

The robot arms finish and withdraw from the completed model.

Angle on Puppet Master as he LAUGHS maniacally.

                             PUPPET MASTER
It's done! He is mine! Mine! Kneel,
                   puppet, before your master!

The Hulk shatters the barrier, and with a ROAR leaps into the room.

                             HULK
Hulk hate you laugh! Hulk smash you
                   toys! Then Hulk smash you!

The Hulk raises his fists and smashes the computer console. The Puppet Master leaps away.

                             PUPPET MASTER
                   No! You're under my control!
                        (screams)
                   You're my puppet!

INTERCUT
The Hulk, ROARING, picking up machinery and hurling it around.

Machinery smashing puppet models.

On the shop floor, in the town, on the streets, people stop. Color floods back into their eyes, and they clutch their heads as though suffering a migraine.

INT. MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- NIGHT
Rick too comes to life with a groan. He glances around as the building shakes.

                             RICK
It must be Doc! He's transformed!
                   Quick! Everyone outside!

He herds the crowd of ex-puppets out through the door.

INT. PUPPET MASTER'S LAIR -- NIGHT
The Hulk, in the midst of fire, smoke and carnage, ROARS.

EXT. MESA CITY -- MASTERS' 3-D PORTRAITS -- NIGHT
The frame shakes. Dust puffs from the building. It crumples, implodes, and falls into a sinkhole.

The Hulk rises from the sinkhole, holding the struggling Puppet Master up with one hand by the neck.

                             PUPPET MASTER
                        (screaming)
Cheat! You cheated! It wasn't your
                   hair! It wasn't ... your ... erk!

The color drains from his eyes, and he goes limp like a doll.

                             PUPPET MASTER
                        (puppet voice)
It wasn't the Hulk's hair. It was
                   someone else's hair.

The Hulk tightens his grip. The Puppet Master's head swells and pops like a balloon. The ruins run like wet clay all over the Hulk's hand and forearm.

INT. GAMMA BASE ONE -- LAB -- DAY
Bruce, Betty, Rick, and Rita stand around, talking.

                             Rick
Sorry, but it'll be a long time
before I take in a puppet show again.

                             BETTY
You speak for all of us, Rick.
                        (to Bruce)
So I guess the Puppet Master had a
puppet of you too, Bruce. That
explains why you took him those
                   samples.

                             BRUCE
That's right. It was lucky that Major
Talbot got the labels mixed up, or
the Puppet Master would be halfway to
conquering the world right about now.

                             RITA
Do you think he's really gone? That
thing the Hulk smushed didn't look
                   human!

Dissolve to close up of a hunk of clay being hand-carved into the likeness of a person.

                             BRUCE (O.S.)
I don't know. All we can do is watch.

Dissolve to:

EXT. DESERT -- DAY
The camera pans and tilts toward the sky. The Hulk comes flying out of it at the screen.

                             NARRATOR (O.S.)
And you can keep watching out too,
                   fans, for more incredible adventures
                   of ... THE INCREDIBLE HULK!
