whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth - Daily Flash contest entry

Crewman s'Hurin Jones. Personal Log.

It's damn cold down here. Colder than space. Heaters failed shortly after the wireless did. This planet is cold as hell. And cursed.

...

I don't know why the skipper took us all the way out here - to the Rim. Bad things happen to ships that wander too far off the beaten path. Skipper said something about 'sense of adventure'. I said, what's wrong with a little common sense. We shouldn't be out here; we should just leave well enough alone! There's enough unexplored planets to explore closer in to Sol. Sherat laughed; she said I should take off my diapers ... everyone laughed. Even the skipper.

Jolly jokers.

...

Chauncey, Grif, N'guma died in some freak accident exploring the ice caves. I don't like this place. I told them when we landed, but who listens to Jonesey. Gives me the shivers, and not from the cold.

...

We found the skipper's body today. Stuffed in the exhaust tube. Everyone has an alibi. Scans 'said' there was no animal life.

...

Woke up to find Harra's body outside. Head crushed. Blunt instrument. Sherat has locked herself in her cabin. Never trusted her. It's just me and her.

...

Heard a scream. Found Sherat's body in storage locker in armory. What the hell was she doing there?

...

Locked the lander down tight. Nothing is getting in. Searched the ship and got Internal Security on Auto. Got enough food to last until Search and Rescue notices we are missing.

...

I put Sherat's body in the cooler myself! It's gone! All of them! Security scans report nothing! Someone is still alive! Uh?! You! How did you ...

AAAIIIIII!!!

...
