Joe Thornton put Toronto up 2-0 at 16:43.
Ottawa's Tim Stuetzle scored at 17:51.
Matthews scored his second goal of the period at 19:37.
Just 1:39 into the second period, Ilya Mikheyev scored to make it 4-1 Toronto.
Mitch Marner made it a 5-1 game at 3:45.
Senator's Connor Brown scored at 7:37.
William Nylander scored on a power play at 11:00 to put the Leafs ahead 6-2.
At 11:11 of the third period, Drake Batherson scored to make it 6-3.
Thankfully, Leaf's Captain, John Tavares scored at 16:53.
Both Matthews and Marner had a four point night.
Leaf's goalie, Michael Hutchinson, who struggled last year in the backup role, had a fantastic night in net.
Hutchinson stopped 34 shots last night.
"I thought he, (Hutchinson), was really good," said Leaf's head coach, Sheldon Keefe at the postgame press conference.
Stuetzle had two points.
Toronto plays the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow night.
