A poem written to celebrate World Music Therapy Day.
Making Music

Music -
an opportunity
for self-expression
especially to those
that find communication
one huge challenge.
A way to let the feelings out,
the emotions flow
like a trickling stream
before morphing and building
into a tidal wave
of pent-up frustrations
finally released.
A tambourine shake
is a whisper;
a drum-roll becomes a shout
or a scream
once those feelings
are on the move
and marching to
what might be an unsteady beat
but to me -
well, it's rhythm, you see.
I might use my voice;
from a tickle in the throat
until reverberations
over-ride my reticence
and stimulate my vocal chords.
Piano keys tentatively touched,
but as note follows note
confidence grows.
Maybe it sounds like
a cacophony to you,
but it lets my soul fly free -
and that is the value
of music
to me.
