Grieving a friend.

M

y friend, you are still often on my mind;
I think of you when thoughts have time to drift;
It happens most of all when life has brought
Impressions seemingly all seen before.

I still remember you so very well,
From school days, halcyon and still so near;
You were a smiling boy, and you are still
In my mind smiling bright and just the same.

Although when thoughts drift nothing may remain,
Without imagination taking hold
of memories of all that had an end,
To make new paths for me to see alone.

It soothes and hurts at once to think of you,
And all the yous that you will never be.
