Artemi Panarin scored 3:48 into overtime to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

It was the first American based team that Toronto has played against in over a year.

The Leafs got some good news before Monday's game.

Toronto star player, Auston Matthews, was in the lineup.

Matthews had eight shots on goal in 22:53 of ice time.

Mike Zibanejad put the Rangers ahead 1-0 at 13:49 of the first period.

Zibanejad had two points.

Michael Bunting tied the game just 1:36 into the second period.

Toronto outshot New York 9-7 in a scoreless third period.

Toronto outshot the Rangers 41-23.

Ranger's goalie, Igor Shesterkin stopped 40 shots.

Leaf's goalie, Jack Campbell stopped 21 shots.

At the postgame press conference, Leaf's head coach, Sheldon Keefe said his team needs to work on five on five.

"We haven't scored enough goals on five on five as a team," said Keefe.

Toronto has three days off before hosting the San Jose Sharks on Friday.
