Liam was not happy, not at all. Oh sure, in the early days, just after the successful completion of his Dinner, which completed his Reaching ceremony, he had been overjoyed at the change in Gwendolyn. In fact, he had been quite mesmerized by her beauty and poise. Qualities she used to great advantage. It soon became clear that she was not the Muse of Inspiration, but that of Pushiness instead. And today was no exception.
"Come on, Liam," Gwendolyn chided him. "Get dressed, we have to go to the Pound and rescue a Muse. These orders come directly from Andre. We must go and soon!"
"That banana-head?" Retorted Liam. "He's your leader not mine. I'm not going."
"Liam," she said sweetly, batting her large, beautiful green eyes and smiling at him. "We need to go, sweetie. It will be fun, you'll see"
"Gah," Liam exclaimed. "Ok, OK... I'm getting dressed." Smiling, she waited. When he turned and headed to his closet, she pinched him on the butt.
"Would you stop that!"
"I can't," she said. "It's such a cute butt."
Growling in frustration Liam turned to his closet and began to get dressed.
Later, as they were walking up to the Rescue Center, Liam asked, "What's this about, anyway? Why are there suddenly so many Muses with no partners?"
"It's just part of a cycle," Gwendolyn replied. "It happens occasionally. Birth rates drop, Reaching ceremonies are not held as often. It's a sad turn of events. Some of them may never see a partner."
Liam opened the door for her, and they walked in. The center was large. A peculiar musty smell hung in the air. He wanted to get this done and get out of here. Passing through a small hallway, they entered the pens. The smell was much stronger here.
Small stalls lined the walls on both sides of the room. A single row of stalls lined the center of the floor.
"Ok," began Gwendolyn. "Our task is..."
"Your task!" Interrupted Liam.
"Our task," she said, putting emphasis on the words, "is to take home a rescue and pick one up for another member of the group. I want to pick our rescue. You can pick the other, as well as who it will go to."
Walking slowly, Liam checked out each of the Muses in Waiting. He saw butterflies and moths, strange fish and octopi, strange monkey-like creatures, frogs (yes, more frogs), insects, antelope, deer... the variety was so large. It boggled the mind. Stopping in front of one stall, he stared. Laying on a bed of straw sat an... odd looking creature, it was almost like a deer, but...
"I am Saiga," the creature said, sounding a bit irritated. "Yes, I know. I look more like a reject from a Star Wars movie than an antelope, but there you have it. Now, if you're though gawking, please move on."
Embarrassed, Liam did so. Looking into several more stalls, he walked on. Suddenly stopping, he stared at something he had never seen before. He had not only found his rescue choice, but he knew exactly who he was going to give it to.
"What are you looking at, Bub!" rasped a small ugly... something. Liam realized he was not quite sure what it was. The placard named it a Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko. He knew he had never seen one before.
"Take a picture, it lasts longer, butthead," the lizard taunted. "Stop staring and take a hike. Now!"
"Sorry, my friend," Liam said, an evil smile spreading across his face." I am afraid you're hired. You'll learn the details soon enough." Now done with his duties, he looked around for Gwendolyn. He soon found her, talking to Saiga. He headed that way.
"Liam," Gwendolyn said warmly as he walked up. "I want you to meet our new friend, Saiga."
"Hello, again," he said. "I'm very pleased to meet you."
"Thank you, Liam," replied a slightly embarrassed Saiga.
"Did you find your choice for one of our friends?" Gwendolyn asked.
"Why, yes, I did," he replied, grinning evilly. "Andre has a surprise coming. I think I found his perfect match, a brother to cherish. I am sure Brother Nature won't mind."
"Liam," Gwendolyn said warningly. "What have you done?"
"Oh, nothing, my sweet," Liam said. "I just found Andre a bother..."
