Gaea's Tears

(A Villanelle)

With flowing tears, She said Enough! today
and gave Her final breath back to the light.
And now She's gone-- at last there was no way

to counteract the poison of Man's sway;
to work Her charms against the Human blight.
With flowing tears, She said Enough! today.

Our Human plague too long had had its play,
and set Her withered countenance to flight.
And now She's gone-- at last there was no way

to bring Her Garden hope to cleanse the day;
to help the sun's attempt to follow night.
With flowing tears, She said Enough! today.

Unequal to the foe, She quit the fray.
Yet how magnificent Her feral fight!
And now She's gone-- at last there was no way.

No longer comes the dawn that we might pray.
I heard Her candle sputter through the night...
With flowing tears, She said Enough! today,
and now She's gone-- at last there was no way!
