A poem in honor of the holiday of Koningsdag. Winner of the 4/27/2022 Writer's Cramp.
It’s King’s Day! Oh, King’s Day!
Fourscore and five years a spring day!
Amsterdam in crowning summer;
permit a brief descriptor: “pretty.”

Make haste, prepare, to join the throng,
A birthday party lasting all day long.
Tumultuous orange madness
overtakes the teeming city.

We’ll venture out to the vrijmarkt,
Jordaan quarter and Vondelpark.
We’ll lunch on buttered ontbijtkoek,
then sauced saté for dinner.

So out then, let us sing and meander
for old King Willem Alexander.
At fifty-five he won’t begrudge
our fill of oranjebitter.
