Sixteen Lines: A Commentary on Isolation

This is for a writing group I’m in. The prompt was to write a poem of 16 lines.

How crushing it is
this loneliness
even the weight of the earth
upon the shoulders of Atlas
was not this substantial
but rather a mere exercise in futility
No, this loneliness
this desolate despair
is the depths of the ocean
it is the impenetrable darkness
the complete and total discord
of no direction,
no sense of up or down, left or right
a nothingness so vast, unending and heavy
that there can be no rescue from its weight
and I have already drowned
