Honorary Cart Whisperer

Character: Marvin, 63, retired janitor with a limp and a big heart
Setting: Local grocery store parking lot

Marvin had one rule: never leave a cart loose. It wasn’t written anywhere. No one paid him to follow it. But every morning at 7:42, he walked the grocery store lot with a coffee in one hand and a slow, determined step.

People noticed, sure. “You don’t even work here,” a teenager laughed once.

“I work for the cause,” Marvin said.

The cause was simple: dignity for the cart crew. He knew what it was like to have a thankless job. Rain, sleet, snow—they still had to fetch carts.

One day, he saw a woman struggling. Baby on one hip, two carts, both rolling away in opposite directions. Marvin moved like lightning, which for him meant “careful shuffle.”

“Got it,” he said, catching one before it dinged a car. He handed it back like a baton in a relay race.

“Thanks,” the woman said, out of breath. “I’m drowning out here.”

He tipped an imaginary hat. “That’s why I’m here. Cart patrol.”

It wasn’t long before the store offered him free coffee. Then a vest. Then a name tag: Marvin – Honorary Cart Whisperer.

Some heroes wear capes. Marvin wore orthopedic shoes and a smile.
