we only regret when we realise that we had lost/ missed out on

When you told me you loved me
I'd wish I'd said 'I do too'
I'd wish I said 'same'
I wish I took the chance to really say what I'd wanted to
Let go of fear and pride.
Let go of everything else inside
And finally decide
To be with you

For if I knew what lay ahead
I wouldn't have hurt you, pushed a sword through your heart
And further pushed it down till a piece fell off , breaking you apart
But that's the thing about regret
It eats you up inside
Only when tragedy hits and im left alone while you dance on the other side

"Haunt me"
"Hurt me"
"Flip my life upside down"
But why would you leave where you are to bother with me, who never thought you were worth the risk ?
Why would you bother with me when I pulled my hand away the day you finally caught my wrist
And courageously asked 'would you be mine?'

Why would you bother?
Why would you care?
Im now Left here to suffer on my own
Visiting with flowers occasionally
Hoping they bud to say your doing okay
And praying for forgiveness daily
For if I knew, I'd take back every last thing I'd ever said
But that's the thing about regret
It only eats you up , when you find out that the man you love is dead.
