Flash Fiction

Moving

Lilda sat, staring out the front window. It was just getting light, looking like a clear and sunny day on the way. Jan came in with coffees.

“Oh, thank you!” Lilda said, as Jan set a cup in front of her. “I forgot to turn it on again…”

“I know, I wake up thinking coffee, you wake up thinking outside.”

“True… but don’t you miss that? How could our lovely little forest be so different now.”

Jan knew the houses were in what they used to call their forest across the street. Jan had tried getting to know some of the new families, but it was difficult. They really had nothing in common with young couples, and families, all the new neighborhood brought here. On their side, they still had a forest, and the stream, but now, often full of kids coming over to play in their woods.

“We should just eliminate them…” Lilda said quietly…

“That will bring bad luck.” Jan said, “We just need to find a new house.”

“Really? You would move with me? You said you’d never leave Mum’s house!”

“Well, I guess it’s ‘never’ now. We’re the ones who don’t fit in here anymore. Let’s find a new place. I’m pretty sure Mom won’t mind.”

“I won’t!” said a voice.

Jan and Lilda turned quickly, there was Mom, looking like a ghost standing next to the door.

“Mom!” They both yelled.

“Yes, I got permission to come here and bring you back.”

“We’re dying?” said Jan, confused.

“No,” Mom laughed, “You’re just moving to the witches’ forest, with me! You’ll love it!”

Nobody knew what happened to the sisters. Eventually the house came down, and many new ones were built. The girls didn’t care, they’d finally found the place where they actually belonged.
