Year 12 creative writing activity - based on an image (yellow chair in an autumn forest)

The colour yellow was the least favourable for you to have chosen, but it looks like it belongs amongst the warm colours of cold’s presence. As the atmosphere sinks into its colder depths, the leaves wave the sun’s banners in bright dances of orange and red and, well, yellow. A little reminder that while the air feels like its pricking your lungs and stinging your fingertips, the warmth is just sleeping. I would watch you fall asleep in that chair hoping that the sounds of the sun’s bannermen, and the birds with their faceless battle cries would follow through to the land of subconscious. When awoken, feeling the tickle of a fern upon the sliver of exposed skin, and seeing the leaves drop once movement blesses your branches again.
It would be a beautiful place to die.
I could see your chest rising with the wind, and falling with the leaves it carried with it. I could see the sun hoisting its blades of sunbeams upon you, basking each shoulder, a soldier it recognises in you.
When the last of the sun’s soldiers falls to meet its comrades upon the floor, I know that it will meet a soft landing, embraced by the ones that fell before it. Having lost its battle to the cold again, I will remind myself that the warmth is just sleeping.
It is a beautiful place for you to die.
