Phil & Luke, An Unlikely Friendship

         “Hey Phil! What brings you here?”

         “Oh hey Luke, nice to see you man! I’m here because something’s afoot, but I’m not sure what.”

         Phil and Luke were old friends who met unexpectedly one day. Phil had been around for a while, Luke was a bit new to the area. They didn’t get together often but both of them enjoyed their time when they did.

         “What have you been up lately Luke?”

         “We took a short drive down to Alton Illinois last weekend. I’m not sure why though. I mean nothing happened, no one went anywhere once we arrived. How about you, my friend?”

         “Well, there was a drive up to the Great Lakes Naval Station yesterday, but like you, I didn’t understand why.”

         “I heard rumors about that!”

         “What did you hear? I’d love know why I went with them.”

         “The discussion was who would go along, me, or you?”

         “Really? I guess I got to go, but it should have been you.”

         “Why do you say that?”

         “Because you were brought in to do just that, go on those long roads trips Jim and Kathy love so much.”

         “Well that begs the question then. Why are we both here? Are they through with us and will use that little red thing now? If you ask me, that can’t be very comfortable.”

         “You didn’t hear? Jim is going to home to New Mexico on a train! Kathy wants that red thing while he’s gone.”

         “Wait, he’s taking a train, and we don’t get to go too”

         “This has been a dream of Jim’s for a long time, she talked him into it.”


         Sometimes it’s amazing what two vans will discuss when parked side by side for a week. If only we could hear more.
