Two country dogs

Over the meadow of the wide sweet farm
They march together- keeping away harm
Barking up the sun, and warning monster moon
It’s the only dog patrol platoon

These two dogs take on all invaders
From errant foxes to those cat haters
First in valor and first to scraps
First to give sincere tail waps

Sniffing and holes and outing all snakes
They love to keep certain neighbors awake
Yet when all patience is tried
Pulling good deeds and saving their hide

In the winter their mission is clear
Sneak in the house protecting the rear
Kids let them in and adults kick them out
It must be the cat sowing such doubt

Puppy sad eyes they turn up the tune
Their ballad of their sweet living room
In they go at last deserved rest
Victory is short when couches are wet

Out on the meadow they walk aloof
Marking borders with practiced proof
Ever so bold yet full of discretion
Charge armadillos in opposite direction
