| That 'unwritten" rule seemed to forbid enlisted personnel and their families were not suppossed to interact with officers families. So, I learned really quick to keep that fact private. Our stint there was relatively short as my husband attended advanced officer training. My cat, Harley managed to escape through an open window and came home enhanced. Her kittens were quite varied. She was a calico with a face that reminded me of Harlequin, hence her name. The kittens, six in all, were all born healthy, although the last one was questionable. He was the largest of the kittens and didn't move or appear to be breathing, at first. After a heart stopping minute or two, mom started cleaning the large kitten and he perked up. His coloring was rally different, a pale orange with a white undercoat. He was the one I kept. Interestingly, he was the first to open his eyes and quick to spring to his siblings defense when accosted by a small puppy on their first outing. He provided hours of entertainment. He would attack the pattern in the linolium, try to get under the 1.5 inch gap between the refrigerator and the floor. He would wake us up min the middle of the night when he found his lost jacks ball and chased it from one end of the trailer to the other. We would bounce the ball against the floor and wall for him to jump in the air trying to catch it. We had to pull him out of the combat boots every time my husband prepared for a field exercise. Our next assignment was to Texas, where we were stationed at my guys' request to be near his brother. There were several small towns in the area and the first one where we lived was interesting. We rented a house this time, which was better, However, I think the neighborhood was not really welcoming to military families. We had a party with several officer couples attended. There was no disturbance or incidents but, the next day while I was bathing, the landlord burst into the house demanding to know who was living there besides us. Thank fully I was not alone and my spouse kept him from entering the bathroom. Later when we were preparing for Christmas, my in-laws came early and graciously replaced the food in our fridge when it bit the dust and ruined all that we had stocked. My husbands' aunt and her family were invited to stay at our house. They declined and also declined to join us for breakfast Christmas morning. My mother-in-law accused me of refusing to feed her sisters' family after she had stocked out refrigerator. My attempts at explanation were futile. |
