Moon Work

Staring out the window, lost in thought, watching the birds weaving through the trees. Almost all the leaves ha fallen.

I was tired of my life. Tired of doing the same things over and over with the same friends. I loved my life, but life had just become so predictable. I could tell as soon as I heard someone on the phone, what they were going to say.

As the night got darker, I got a little giddy and stated talking to it. “Where ya going Moon?” I said, making myself laugh. “Can I go with ya?”

“Just around,” came a voice back, followed by a chuckle.

Totally embarrassed I leaned out, “Who’s there! You’re not funny!”

“I wasn’t the one talking to the moon… I’m Andy, we just moved in the gray house. The Arend’s? I’m your new neighbor!”

“Why are you sneaking around in the dark?” I asked, in a nasty voice.

“I have a light,” he held up a flashlight and popped it on, “I was just exploring. This is my first night here we used to live in Virginia. Do you go to Everitt High? I’ll be starting there next week.”

“Oh,” I said, still not knowing what the guy looked like because it was too dark. “Yes, I do...”

“Wow, if you have time tomorrow, could you tell me a little about it? What grade are you in?”

“Sophomore…”

“Me too! Are you gonna be home tomorrow? I can come over!”

“Sure, my name is Alice, what’s yours’s?”

“Alex! That’s so cool! Alex and Alice! It’s like we’re twins. I’ll come over late morning. See you then!”

As he walked away, I saw his face for the first time. And, I’ve seen it daily now for many, many years. Now that’s moon work!
