| I was standing at the Quincy Center 'T' Station. There was a homeless person sitting on the ground with no jacket and looking more than a little haggard. I have just given the man a five dollar bill. A young boy, probably in his early teens, walked up to this homeless person and handed him a cup of what I assume was coffee, a bag containing something to eat, and I had been standing close enough to see that the boy gave him a ten dollar bill. I was more than impressed as I watched the grateful man thank the boy. The man tried to give back the money, I believe he was being humble, but the boy refused several times. The boy walked away from the homeless man. The man watched the boy disappear in the crowd as I did. My faith in humanity had been in limbo. I did not think people were all that compassionate. I thought that compassion was a lost art. But seeing this has restored my belief. There are good people in this world. This boy was no more than thirteen or fourteen years old. At that age kids just do not stop to think about those in need or this is my perception. I have a nephew around that age and he is compassionate to a point especially with animals. But to by food, drink, and give money to a complete stranger in need I do not know if he would do what that boy did. I am just so proud and honored to have witnessed this. CAPPY |
