Flash Fiction

Never Will Be

The washing machine was broken. I have fixed it in the past but it was getting old, and so was I… so I decided perhaps it was time for a new one. It’s not like our clothes were going to grow-up and move out eventually.

Some do move out, usually when my sister tells me she won’t go to the store with me wearing “that shirt” because it has stains on it, and a missing button in a bad place… As if I would wear that one to the store! (I save it for cleaning the garage and yard stuff…) So up I went to get a better shirt.

Perusing my closet, I suddenly realized I hadn’t bought any new clothes for years! Not much of a get outer, and seldom care about how I look. I was very good at taking care of my clothes, clean, hung on hangers in the closet, folded stuff folded and carefully put into drawers… Yet, they were all apparently bought in the stone age. I was never into fashion, just into wearing clothes. Right then and there I decided I needed some new clothes!

Nancy was delighted! She wanted to start by tossing my entire closet worth right into the trash! No… though that shirt did go. She took me to a very reasonable store nearby, and I bought several new shirts, and some new slacks too! Nan decided we needed to clothes shop at least once every season… (Did I say decided? Actually, insisted…) While shopping was not my thing, I must admit I felt more comfortable going places once I knew my attire was clean, in good shape, and fit in with the season. Who knew!

P.S. Nancy actually picked out everything, I’m still not into clothes… and never will be.
