Cruel irony

Our moms sat across from each other,
tea in hand, conversation flowing easily.
Your dad fills the kitchen with another entertaining story.

Everything felt so right,
and yet so wrong.
The universe laughing quietly,
showing us what could have been.

Six years, and it never happened.

Now, we cannot meet each other’s eyes,
cannot speak freely,
but here they sit,
at ease.

A cruel twist of fate,
the irony lingering,
hitting quietly,
deep inside.
