Flash Fiction

And Cynthia Laughed

“I promise!” said Jane.

“No!” James said for the fourth time.

“Come on,” Jane begged,

“Nope, I know you too well.”

“What do you mean? Don’t you trust me? We’re practically the same person!”

“I agree we’re close…”

“Close? You met me approximately nine months before we were born! I’ve known you longer than anybody in the whole world!”

“What about Mom?”

“Mom didn’t really know us until we were actually born.”

She didn’t know what we looked like. But she knew other things, like I was a boy and you a girl, and how much we weighed, and other things she learned from testing. Even when we probably would be born. Which turned out to be the very day we were born!”

“Well, does she know you keep secrets from me?”

“I would be surprised if not, even she keeps secrets from you, you can’t keep a secret!”

“What?! I can to keep a secret! I keep secrets better than you!”

“Oh yeah? Well, prove it! What is Mom getting me for our Birthday?”

“It’s a secret too! I can’t tell you anything about the computer games!”

“And there it goes… they’re getting me computer games!”

“Oops…” Jane said.

“So, I will act being surprised! I promise?”

“Right… How did you find out about the bikes?”

“Same as you, Cynthia told me.”

“She didn’t tell me! … but maybe Cynthia knows what you’re getting me!” Off she ran to find Cynthia.

“Why did you tell her that?” Cynthia asked from behind the door. “I didn’t tell you anything!”

“It’s a twin thing. I have to keep her busy so she doesn’t ruin the surprise.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“Exactly!”

“However, did I deserve you two? I was so happy as an only child…”

“Fate,” James said.

And Cynthia laughed.
