Some days, faith feels strong. Other days, it feels like it barely exists.

Day Two

When Faith Feels Thin

Some days, faith feels strong. Other days, it feels like it barely exists.

No one really talks about that part. We talk about belief as if it is supposed to be steady, solid, and confident all the time. But lived faith does not work that way. It stretches and contracts. It grows quiet. It feels uncertain. Sometimes it feels like it has slipped through your fingers altogether.

If today feels like one of those days, you are not alone.

In the Gospels, there is a man who brings his child to Jesus, hoping for healing. When Jesus asks if he believes, the man gives one of the most honest answers in all of Scripture. He says, I believe. Help my unbelief. Not polished. Not impressive. Just real.

That moment matters more than we realize.

He did not wait until his faith was stronger. He did not pretend he was confident. He brought what he had, thin as it was, and trusted Jesus with the rest. And Jesus did not turn him away.

We often think faith has to be loud to count. We imagine bold prayers, firm declarations, certainty without cracks. But Scripture is filled with people who followed God while afraid, confused, and unsure. Moses doubted his ability to speak. David cried out in despair. Peter walked on water one moment and sank the next.

Faith is not the absence of doubt. It is choosing to stay present even when doubt shows up.

There are days when prayer feels forced. When Scripture feels distant. When God seems quiet in a way that makes you wonder if you did something wrong. Those days can be unsettling. They can make you question whether your faith is slipping away.

But often, nothing is wrong at all.

Faith matures through seasons of quiet. Roots grow underground where no one can see them. A tree does not look impressive while it is strengthening below the surface, but that work matters. In the same way, faith deepens in moments that feel unremarkable or even dry.

If your faith feels thin today, resist the urge to panic. Thin faith still reaches. Thin faith still matters. Thin faith still counts.

Jesus once compared faith to a mustard seed, something small enough to overlook. He did not say it had to be large or impressive. He said it had to be alive. Even the smallest seed holds potential when placed in the right hands.

You do not need to feel inspired to be faithful today. You do not need the right words or the right emotions. You simply need honesty. God has never been intimidated by doubt. He is not offended by your questions. He is not disappointed when you struggle.

What pulls people away from faith is not doubt. It is silence. It is pretending. It is the belief that they must hide their uncertainty to belong. But God invites you to bring your whole self, including the parts that feel unsure.

If today all you can say is, I’m here, let that be enough. If all you can offer is a quiet sigh or a frustrated thought, offer that. Faith does not disappear because it feels weak. Sometimes it is simply resting.

Think of a candle burning low. The flame is small, but it is still light. It still pushes back darkness. It still does what fire does. Your faith, even when it feels dim, is still faith.

You may not feel close to God today. But closeness is not always something we feel. Sometimes it is something we trust. God does not drift in and out of our lives based on our emotional state. He remains steady even when we are not.

So be gentle with yourself today. Do not measure your faith by how inspired you feel. Measure it by your willingness to keep showing up, even quietly. Especially quietly.

Faith that survives thin days is faith that lasts.

And sometimes, the most honest prayer you can pray is the one God welcomes most.

I believe.
Help my unbelief.

That prayer still echoes. And it is still heard.
