How it feels to still not have my own heart returned to me, in a hypothetical story.

"Look at that massive bird!", I had told you about previously.

You and I were on a walk, watching all the different birds migrate south as we often did on colder days.

"Wow! There's so many this year!", You replied as your eyes followed. Those big hazel eyes that swallowed me whole countless times all those years.

We ran down the sidewalks of New York our whole lives when we were growing up; watching the seasons change along with the people as time went by, year by year.

"Let's go!", And we did as you took my hand in yours and ran off with me to watch more birds.

I would've confessed about the burning love in my chest, if I would have known I would end up regretting keeping silent in later years. Thinking about those horribly bittersweet memories of those years we grew up together.

But it's been too late for many years, and I haven't even seen your face since then. I even ended up throwing away the memories and pictures because it all hurt too much to keep around.

I regret it all.

So often I'm left wondering: "Why didn't I ever open my mouth?"

Now all I have is the regrets and a heart that you never gave back to me.
