Party Favors

Some people have secrets even without knowing it

George's face flushed red as a beet, and he tried to look nonchalant as he turned slightly toward the wall.

"Why didn’t you tell me sooner it was unzipped?!" he whispered fiercely at his date, who appeared to be somewhat cruelly entertained.

"Don't worry; it's not like anyone's going to be put to shame."

George surreptitiously— at least he thought so— zipped his pants, picked up his drink, and looked around. There a few eyes that suddenly looked in a new direction, and he heard a few snickers, but at least the whole room wasn't staring and pointing.

After he regained his composure, George went to the kitchen to fetch them each a drink. On the way back, he looked toward Tara's feet and grinned. He gave her a drink, then moved over to a small group of people. Soon he waved Tara over. One by one, some subtly, some not so much so, each looked down at the floor and tried to hide a smile. They mingled through three knots of people the same way before Tara began to get irritated.

"Why are they all looking at my feet?" she complained.

"I think they're admiring your shoes," he replied blandly.

But Tara's friend was in the next group, and when she looked down, she pulled Tara close and whispered in her ear. Tara looked down, and it was her turn to blush.

She scuttled to the bathroom as quickly as she could without drawing too much attention. She tugged the white scrap out of her cuff and looked crossly at George. "You could have told me I had a damn dryer sheet sticking out of my jeans, George!"

George looked down, checked his fly, and smiled contentedly. "Zippity-do-dah, baby— One good turn deserves another," he responded dryly.
