a poem about the inevitable...

You Always

You always pick.
You always choose.
You always win.
And you always lose.

You’re always picking fights.
You’re always choosing war.
You’re always thinking victory.
And you’re always wanting more.

You beg for the attention.
You wallow in the mire.
You yearn for untold glory.
And you stoke the flames much higher.

One day we’ll pick a gruesome hero.
One day we’ll choose a monster.
One day we’ll take no prisoners.
And then you won’t belong here.

You won’t be picking the fights.
You won’t be choosing the war.
You won’t be thinking of victory.
You won’t be searching for more.

You’ll be seeking emotional attention.
You’ll wallow in excruciating pain.
You’ll yearn for peaceful glory.
But evoke the flames of shame.

You won’t pick the simple coffin.
You won’t choose the blank headstone.
You won’t be fondly remembered.
And you’ll rest in peace alone.
