Chapter 1 - The Islands |
| Someone once told me that finding that one person who truly got you and always had your back was a bit like finding an island in the dark. You could spend an entire lifetime drifting through life, lost in the abyss, looking for them and never find them, because it didn’t work like that. You didn’t find them, they found you. When you are on the edge of all hope being gone, from the darkness they come and would find you and from that moment on, life would never be the same again. She also said that once you found one island, soon enough and in time you would find more and all that had ever come before would just become a fading memory. I remember the day that she told me that, listening to her and thinking it was just some stupid means of giving me hope in the bleakest of times. I can’t really explain why but deep down, a part of me still believed her tales all the same. Until one day I found an island all of my own and that someone who told me those tall tales came to be known simply to me as “Mum”. She was right too, soon after I found her, another came along, an island very much all of my own, Paisley, my best friend. Whenever Mum spoke of her first true island, she got so emotional and I never truly understood quite why and when she saw me and Paisley become one, even more so. Mum was so happy about it all, crying joyfully as she spoke of it and I didn’t fully understand quite why it affected her so much. Until I came to witness the formation of an island before my eyes and I came to understand exactly why it meant so much to her. |
