Sir Godfrey makes an offer to Jared's family. |
| Jared’s father insisted the knight sit at their table, though the table itself was little more than rough boards balanced on stone blocks. The house still smelled faintly of smoke from the raid, but Jared’s mother had done her best. A pot of stew simmered, with herbs gathered from the hills. Sir Godfrey Rowland ducked slightly to enter, removing his gauntlets and setting them beside the door. “It is an honor,” Jared’s father said, offering the only sturdy chair. “You’ve helped this village more than you know.” Sir Godfrey inclined his head, accepting the meal with silent gratitude. Jared watched him closely as they ate, noting how carefully the knight held the bowl, as though respecting the effort behind it. Outside, dusk settled, painting the sky a fading blue that leaked through the patched shutters. When the meal ended, Sir Godfrey set his spoon down and folded his hands. His expression grew thoughtful, heavier than before. “Our patrol will be leaving soon,” he said gently. “The King’s orders have us moving along the border roads.” The words struck Jared like a thrown stone, sudden and hard. His mother’s smile faltered. His father straightened, but said nothing. Sir Godfrey’s gaze shifted to Jared. “However, I have watched your son. He works hard. He listens. He learns. I would offer him the chance to travel with us, as a squire in training.” Jared’s heart seemed to forget how to beat. His father stared, stunned, while his mother pressed her hands together, uncertain whether to hope or fear. “There would be compensation,” Sir Godfrey continued. “Coin sent back regularly to help your family rebuild. It will not make you rich, but it will help.” Silence filled the room, thick as evening air. Outside, a night bird began to fly across the darkening sky.
