Zeus

A raw study of hereditary violence, opportunism, and a war criminal's survival.

His call sign was "Zeus". Anastasios Drakoularakos was a career NCO in the Greek Army's mountain commandos. He was turning thirty when they offered him blood, honor, and five grand a month on the Ukrainian front lines.

The money was good, but his thirst for revenge ran deeper. He'd been raised on his aunts' laments. The communists had butchered his Nazi-clad great-grandfather like a goat before they threw his carcass into the Pit.*

He slaughtered plenty of women and children. Family tradition, you see.

When they cornered him for war crimes he didn't flinch. Found a corpse in his foxhole and dressed it in his uniform.

His family received a tin medal, enclosed in a warm letter signed by the Prime Minister himself.

His name is commemorated. But the man went to ground.

*"The Pit" (Πηγάδα): Specifically referencing the "Pigada of Meligalas," a site of mass execution in September 1944. Following the liberation of Greece, members of the Nazi-collaborationist Security Battalions and civilians were executed there by the resistance. It remains one of the most polarizing symbols of modern Greek history.

"Δίας", μια ιστορία με 121 Λέξεις Ακριβώς (ούτε μία παραπάνω ούτε μία παρακάτω ούτε μία παραδίπλα).


Γνωστότερος με το παρατσούκλι "Δίας", ο Αναστάσιος Δρακουλαράκος ήτανε μόνιμος υπαξιωματικός ορεινών καταδρομών στον ελληνικό στρατό. Θα τριαντάριζε όταν του πρoτείνανε αίμα, τιμή και πέντε χήνες μηνιάτικο για την πρώτη γραμμή του ουκρανικού μετώπου.
Καλά τα λεφτά, μα μεγαλύτερη η δίψα του για εκδίκηση· ήτανε γαλουχημένος με τα μοιρολόγια των θειάδων του. Οι κομμουνιστές είχανε σφάξει σαν τραγί το γερμανοντυμένο προπάππου του, προτού πετάξουνε το κουφάρι του στην Πηγάδα.
Μακέλεψε μπόλικα γυναικόπαιδα· η οικογενειακή παράδοση, βλέπετε.
Τον στριμώξανε για εγκλήματα πολέμου. Δεν κώλωσε, βρήκε ένα πτώμα στο σουλούπι του και το έντυσε με τη στολή του.
Οι δικοί του έλαβαν, εσώκλειστο σε μια θερμότατη επιστολή υπογεγραμμένη από τον ίδιο τον Πρωθυπουργό, ένα τσίγκινο παράσημο.
Το όνομά του μνημονεύεται, αλλά ο ίδιος έγινε μπουχός…
