The impressive I have ever met. |
| Directed by Krzysztof Pius Zanussi Starring Maja Komorowska Scott Wilson Music by Wojciech Kilar I watched this beautiful movie on the midnight TV programs about 32 years ago. In 1946, US military arrived in Poland to investigate Nazi war crimes on their occupied territory during World War Two. Among them was Norman (Scott Wilson), an American soldier who joined the investigation. Norman was traumatized by his experience as a prisoner in Germany. He happened to meet Emilia (Maja Komorowska), a Polish woman who lost her husband and was trying to rebuild her life with her ailing mom. Though they spoke different languages, they gradually shared a deep emotional bond. Also, Norman soon got along with Emilia's mom. When Norman was ordered to return to the USA, he invited Emilia and her mom to come along with him. Emilia couldn't decide to leave her homeland. Meanwhile, Emilia's mom, considering her declining health and relocation costs, tried to do it for her daughter's sake. In other words, when Emilia was out of sight, she stopped taking her medication, bringing herself closer to death. After mom's death, Emilia tried to go with Norman to America. At the same time, Emilia invited her neighbor, a local prostitute, to immigrate to the USA with her instead of her mom. However, Emilia realized the passage budget she had was only enough for one person to immigrate. She also noticed her mom knew that and tried to speed up her own death for Emilia. Emilia sacrificed herself and gave the chance to the neighbor. Norman was waiting for Emilia at the meeting place. That was a really sad scene in the movie. Decades have passed, and a notice arrived from America giving Emilia, who was now an elderly woman in a nursing home, someone's legacy. She soon recalled Norman and tried to prepare for departure, but she lost consciousness in the final scenes. In the ending scene, at the American Wild West location (sometimes Norman and Emilia talked about American western movies), Norman greeted Emilia with a smile and they danced pleasantly. Really beautiful and toutching scene. Wojciech Kilar in charge of music is beautiful. |
