A mystery man enthralls a crowd.

Whatsit Really?

As the man set to work, a crowd gathered. He was so enthralled with what he was doing, he didn’t notice. Then a voice spoke.
“What is this supposed to be?”
The man looked up: “Whatever you want it to be.”
A woman chimed in: “But, what is it SUPPOSED to be?”
The man sat back. He put his brush back in the paint can.
“Again, it’s whatever you want it to be.”
The crowd went silent but all eyes watched his every move.

“I still don’t get it,” said an elderly man.
“Maybe you will when I’m finished,” the man said.
“When will you be finished?” a teenager asked.
“When it’s done, I’ll know it.”
“So, you could go on forever?”
“I could, but I usually don’t”
Briefly, he was able to continue without comment.
“Well, I’ve got places to go, people to see. Maybe I’ll come back later.”
“I do want to lunch with my friends and do a little shopping.”
“Yeah, my friends are waiting for me at the mall,” the teen said.
Soon, most of his audience drifted away. Still, he worked.

By sunset, he stopped and packed up.
“You mean you’re finished?” commented an elderly couple, the only audience left.
“I’ve decided it’s finished.”
“Doesn’t look like it.”
The man handed over his cans and brushes.
“If it needs more, fill your boots.”
As he left, the pair were arguing what to add and in what color. He smiled to himself. Once he was out of sight, he changed into his real self and shot up to a certain cloud formation that hid his ultra-space unit.
“That should keep the earthlings busy. They never see anything as finished. Always improving without really improving. Their eyes will be off the skies for some time.”
