The Last Ordinary Day

A reflection on time and how we mistake awareness for action until it’s too late

We lived as if knowing were enough.

It moved alongside us,
patient, unremarkable,
asking for nothing until it was already gone.

We filled it with small substitutions.
Later.
Soon.
When things settle.

We spoke as if it could hear us,
as if it would understand delay,
as if it had a stake in our good intentions.

Nothing marked the moment it thinned.
No sound.
No warning.
Just the quiet removal of what we assumed would stay.

Conversations that won’t resume.
Ordinary days we didn’t recognize as the last.
Care we kept saving for when we were ready.

It didn’t betray us.
It behaved exactly as promised.

What hurts is how gently we held it while it was still here.

As if it would wait.
As if knowing had ever been enough.
