What The Bottle Remembers

She forgot her life—but the bottle never forgot her.

The metal of the shopping cart is cold against your cheek.

It rattles when you breathe.

Or maybe that’s just your hands shaking.

You don’t remember how you got here.
Don’t remember your name.
Don’t remember what day it is—or why the sky feels wrong.

All you know is the bottle.

It’s clutched so tight in your hand your knuckles ache,
fingers curled like it might disappear if you loosen your grip.

You stare at it like it might tell you something.

It doesn’t.

But your body does.

Your throat burns like it’s been screaming.
Your lips taste like something bitter… and old regret.

You try to stand.

The world tilts.

The cart groans.

Something falls from inside it—a photo.

You freeze.

Slowly… slowly… you pick it up.

A woman is smiling in it.
Dark hair. Bright eyes. Red lipstick.

She looks… alive.

Loved.

Known.

Your chest tightens.

Because you don’t recognize her.

But your hands start shaking anyway.

There’s writing on the back.

You turn it over.

“In case you forget again—this is you.”

The air leaves your lungs.

Again?

Your heart pounds like it’s trying to escape.

You dig through the cart now—frantic, desperate.

There are more things.

Receipts.
Empty bottles.
A small notebook.

You grab it.

Flip it open.

Every page is your handwriting.

Messy. Urgent. Breaking.

Day 1: Just one drink to sleep.
Day 12: I think I’m losing time.
Day 47: I don’t remember yesterday.
Day 103: If I wake up again like this—please, God—remember this hurts.

Your hands tremble so hard the notebook almost falls.

You flip faster.

Day ???: I woke up in a parking lot today. Didn’t know who I was.
Day ???: I started leaving notes. Maybe next time I’ll listen.
Day ???: The bottle takes everything… even me.

You stop breathing.

The world narrows.

Your reflection catches in the curved metal of the cart.

Distorted.

Unfamiliar.

Gone.

And suddenly—
it hits you.

Not like a memory…

…but like a feeling.

Grief.
Loss.
Something you loved slipping through your fingers over and over again.

You look down at the bottle.

For the first time—

you don’t see comfort.

You see a thief.

Your grip loosens.

Just slightly.

The cart creaks.

The wind moves.

And somewhere deep inside you…

something small—
something stubborn—

refuses to forget this moment.
