The Light Upon The Hill

Dinner with dear friends that nourished not just appetite & sociability, but hope

Old friends
An evening spent in pleasant conversation
Wine and food abundance
Generously given
Warmed by loving hands
A listening ear
A family in flower
That holds unto itself a flame
Of all things that we hold dear
And shared remembrance
Surveyed the present views
The global news
The hopes for better times
And fears of what becomes of us
Things we can't control in coming years
Yet knowing there are always
Ways and means
To turn misfortune's strut and fret
To better roads
Towards the light upon the hill
A worthy life that's virtue's child
And will not fail when all seems lost
And futures dim
As darkness casts its veil

I departed our encounter cheered
Light of mind and calmed
That friends
Stout hearts
Good souls
Are there and present to play their parts
No matter where the journey leads
Be it at the end
Or at the start

Fond farewells
Especially little Uma's
So big now
Her little shell
A gift as big
As her good will
It will proudly sit upon the sill
Above my desk
A reminder that we are not alone
That small things matter
Even in the storm and clatter
The gathering gloom
There is a light upon the hill.
