free verse about coffee

Mmmm. The aroma alone can stir the blood.
To wake up to the smell of coffee!
I owe my college education
To freshly brewed coffee.
It powered me to finish term papers,
Study all night for mid-terms,
Or revive me for the next class
When sleep had been too absent.

The smell of coffee and bacon
Cooking on a campfire
Had a whole campground awake,
Strangers smiling and waving to us,
It helped me work up nerve
To bait fishhooks and reel in prey.

Black coffee substituted for sodas
And kept me going at work.
It was an excuse to visit the break room
And talk with coworkers.
Finally, coffee took its toll
On my GI system and made me cut back.

Now the cardiologist says
"Only one cup a day".
The GI doctor says "One, preferably none."
The medical profession doesn't approve.
So, I guiltily allow myself just one.

In all the old westerns, they drank coffee
Instead of water. Even at bedtime.
You weren't polite if you didn't give
The sheriff a cup of coffee.
Maybe I live in the wrong era.
Or we place health above pleasure!
