Martha and her mother have different priorities at the State Fair. |
| Martha’s mother mortified her by forcing her to wear her leash to the State Fair. All the other children could run around together, but Martha had to wait with her mother in a long languorous line just to see who had the greatest gargantuan gourd. “This is taking forever!” Martha whined. She tugged on the buckle of her restraint, but couldn’t figure out how to be free. “Stop that.” Her mother gave a swift tug on the leash. “It’s really busy here today and I don’t want someone to take you.” “Take me?” “Come here, Martha.” Her mother commanded. A few children who were old enough to read giggled at the pair, on account of Martha’s mom’s shirt, which read: Who saved who? It was punctuated with a giant paw print. Martha allowed some slack on the leash and obediently stood next to her mother. Her mind, however followed the giggling children as they walked out of the Contest Pavilion and out to the yard. She imagined they were headed to the Giant Slide or the Midway. “Mommy?” “Hmm?” “Can we go to the Giant Slide after this?” Martha looked up at her mother with her most convincing pleading pout. “Maybe.” She sang. “Maybe?” “Are you going to be a good girl for the rest of the line?” “Oh yes! The very best!” Martha jumped and wiggled with excitement. “Alright, alright. Stay close to me and stay still.” Her mother continued, “We’re almost there.” The pair entered the vegetable room, but Martha couldn’t focus on the basket of turnips or the wheelbarrow of squash. Between the legs of other patrons, she saw flashes of orange. Her mother lifted her up so she could see all 752.5 pounds of plump pumpkin. “Woah!” “I knew you’d love it.” ********************** Word Count: 296 Prompt: Write a story that includes the words: contest, basket, line https://www.writing.com/main/forums/item_id/896794-Daily-Flash-Fiction-Challenge... |
