A Letter to My Bestie

This version keeps the quiet, reflective tone, but makes it deeply

James,
I used to tell you all the time that if I ever lost you, I’d have nobody left who truly had my back the way you did.
Back then, I said it half-joking, like maybe saying it softly would somehow keep it from ever becoming real. But life doesn’t bargain with fear, does it?
And then one day, it did become real.
Losing you felt like losing the one place I could set my armor down without being judged for the bruises underneath it. You were the person who showed up—through chaos, heartbreak, mistakes, and all the ugly parts of life most people run from. You never needed me to pretend I was okay just to deserve loyalty.
After you were gone, I think part of me froze there beside the grief.
I carried your absence like something heavy strapped to my ribs. I kept trying to survive loudly, like if I kept fighting hard enough, hurting hard enough, or carrying everyone else, it would somehow make sense that you were gone and I was still here.
But lately, I’ve started realizing something.
You wouldn’t want me to spend my whole life buried beside your memory.
I think you’d want me to laugh again without guilt attached to it.
To breathe without feeling like I’m betraying the people I lost.
To stop apologizing for surviving.
I still find you in strange places sometimes—
in songs that hit too hard,
in late-night silence,
in moments where I need strength and hear your voice in the back of my mind telling me to get back up.
And maybe that’s what love becomes after loss.
Not disappearance.
Not closure.
Just quieter ways of carrying someone forward.
I miss you in ways I don’t think language fully knows how to explain.
But I’m trying, James.
Trying to become someone who remembers you with warmth instead of only devastation.
Trying to believe that being loved by you once was a gift bigger than losing you was a curse.
I hope wherever you are now, you know this:
You were right about me being stronger than I believed.
And I was right too—
Nobody ever had my back quite like you did.
— Always.
