Lyrics I wrote for a country song |
| I’ve got two hundred miles of white lines left to go, Keeping time with the static on a late-night radio. I keep reaching for a hand across the center console seat, Losing my mind to the rhythm of this Kansas heat. I’ve been dressing up this silence like a conversation, Every roadside diner is a holy destination, ‘Cause I’m convinced I’ll find you at a booth in the back, With your keys on the table and your bags all packed. I ain’t looking for a shadow, I’m looking for the light, To the name I haven't whispered in the middle of the night. I’ve got a heart that’s over-furnished, and a table set for two, Just spending all my "I love yous" on a ghost that looks like you. I’m looking for a spirit that don’t know how to flinch, That wouldn't give an empire for a single muddy inch. Someone who sees a storm cloud and only hears the rain, Who hasn't learned the heavy math of counting up the pain. I’m scanning every exit, every flickering neon sign, Waiting for a miracle to jump the yellow line. I pulled into a rest stop just to stretch and clear my head, Thinking ‘bout the miles and all the "somedays" that I’ve fed. I caught my own reflection in the window of the truck, And for a second there, I swear my heart got stuck. I saw a sweat-stained Stetson with a rim pulled low and tight, The one I used to wear when I believed I’d win the fight. It wasn’t a stranger looking back across the glass— It was the one I left behind in the tall summer grass. I wasn’t looking for a lover to fill the empty side, I was looking for the version of me that took a place to hide. I’m a suitcase by the doorway, I’m a fire in the rain, I’m the one I’ve been waiting for to take away the pain. Yeah, I’m finally home... on this lonely highway. Just me and that hat. Yeah, the believer's back. Finally found him... On a long road home. |
