| Wonders Never Cease "At least the wind isn't blowing," said Jane, always the optimistic one. “You can go in,” said Frank, “I know it’s cold. Jeff’ll be here any minute.” “Jeff could come in too, and warm up. I rarely get a glimpse of your old friends, let alone get to say hello. I’ve heard so much about them, especially Jeff.” “What’s so special about Jeff?” “Well, you must have known him well, he lived next door to you. And every time you tell a story he’s in it. “Yes, but we weren’t close. He had his own bunch when we moved in. They had known each other since school started, in kindergarten! We moved there when I was just starting sixth-grade. Jeff helped me with the school and the right bus stuff. He treated me like I was a new baby brother, though he’s only three weeks older than me. That’s how I got to go everywhere they went. “But now we’re all grownups and you’re still friends…” “More like brothers. Like today he called to borrow our lawn mower because his is broken. See, more like a brother than a friend.” “Well,” Jane said, “brothers are more important than friends. Friends come and go; brothers are brothers for the rest of their lives. It’s like an extra arm or something. “Huh, I never thought of it like that. I don’t have a real brother and neither does Jeff… Well… it you still have some coffee in there; I’ll invite him in and see what happens.” He did, and Jeff stayed, and a whole new existence popped up between them. Jeff was apparently getting his courage up to ask his girlfriend to be his wife! And un-known to both guys, Jeff’s girlfriend was Frank’s real cousin Susan! Wonders never cease. |
